• Chinese laborers were crucial in building railroads that opened up western      ranching, farming, and mining areas. Many later worked on ranches, herding  f cattle or maintaining land.

Agriculture & Farming

• Japanese,  Chinese, Filipino, and Korean farmers helped establish large-scale vegetable, fruit, and rice production in California, Washington, and Hawaii and brought irrigation techniques used in rural America.

Fishing & Coastal Work

• Japanese and Chinese communities worked in commercial fishing along the Pacific Coast, catching salmon, cod, and other species.
